The 2008 NBA Draft Lottery was held on May 20, 2008. The draft order was determined by a random drawing of ping-pong balls from the 14 NBA teams that did not make the playoffs that season. The Chicago Bulls had the best odds of winning the top pick, followed by the Miami Heat and the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, the draft lottery produced a surprise winner, as the Chicago Bulls fell to the No. 9 pick, while the Rose Garden audience erupted in jubilation when the Chicago-represented Charlotte Bobcats secured the No. 1 pick. The Bobcats used that pick to select University of Memphis point guard Derrick Rose. Other notable picks in the draft include Michael Beasley going second overall to the Miami Heat, and Kevin Love going fifth overall to the Memphis Grizzlies (who would ultimately trade him to the Minnesota Timberwolves on draft day).
